Tom Onyshko lives in Toronto, Canada with his spouse, Brenda McPhail, their two children, and several computers. He began photographing in 35 mm black and white in the mid-1980s, and took up digital photography in 2005. He was raised in Winnipeg, Manitoba and returns to Western Canada for vacation each year. His favourite colour is blue. His favourite animal is the squid.*
* No really, it's true. Other random facts about me include that I am of Ukrainian descent and that my last name is pronounced as if the “y” was an “e”. Here's a self-portrait.
Most of the photographs on this website were taken with a Canon Digital Rebel XT, using a Canon 35 mm, 50 mm, 17-55 mm or 17-40 mm lens. Newer photographs were shot in RAW format, manipulated in RAW conversion software (Rawshooter), and adjusted in Adobe Photoshop. Earlier photographs were shot in JPEG and manipulated with Picassa, Google’s free image editor. Some photographs were shot in JPEG with a Canon Powershot A80 or A620, two point and shoots that provide good image quality.
Most of the images were adjusted in Photoshop to lighten or darken them and to change their contrast; in addition, most were sharpened using Photoshop’s unsharp mask function. Black and white images were converted from colour using Picassa, Photoshop, or a dedicated conversion program (usually B/W Styler). For the purposes of printing at 12 x 18 inches, the images are interpolated using Genuine Fractals.
With very few exceptions, the photographs were taken with manual settings and without the use of a tripod.
For more information on the photographs, see the notes for individual images and for Gallery 1, Gallery 2, Gallery 3 and Gallery 4.
This website is dedicated to Brenda, without whom it would not be possible. She has endured much foolishness with persistent good humour, and generally supported and encouraged said photographer far beyond the call of duty. All my love.
