Gallery 1: 18. Canal (June 2007 in Niagara Falls, Ontario)

12x18 inches. Canon Rebel XT with Canon 17-40 mm lens at 17 mm; 1/60 second; f/9.5; ISO 100.

I photographed this hydroelectric canal where it runs under Lundy’s Lane in Niagara Falls, Ontario. Formally known as the Queenston-Chippawa Power Canal, it supplies water to the Sir Adam Beck #1 Power Station and was built between 1917 and 1921. It’s quite an impressive sight, although this photograph focuses on only part of it (looking south). I thought that the canal would be a good subject for a vertical image, but ended up preferring a horizontal one that emphasizes the lush cover of trees on either side of the canal. (For more information on the history of this canal and the power station, see: http://www.niagaraparks.com/heritage/adam_beck_history.php.)
